Our air is important and during National Air Quality Awareness Week, running from May 5 through May 9, the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) invites residents to understand the importance of air quality, making informed decisions, and the steps we can all take to “Stay Air Aware.”

Weld County’s Air Quality Program has partnered with the LINC library in Greeley and the Fort Lupton Public and School Library to offer engaging educational activities for families. These include air-themed reading lists, scavenger hunts, and take-home experiment kits designed to help kids (and adults!) explore the science behind air pollution and monitoring.

Weld County’s Air Quality Policy Analyst, Dr. Annareli Morales, will be at the LINC library on Thursday, May 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet Dr. Morales, ask questions about local air quality, and learn how you can contribute feedback to shape future air quality programs in Weld County.

Dr. Morales is a co-facilitator of the Regional Air Monitoring and Messaging (RAMM) group, which developed daily themes for Colorado's Air Quality Awareness Week activities. “We all need to breathe air,” Dr. Morales explains, “but the quality of the air we breathe can vary depending on where you are in Colorado. Each person’s response to air pollutants can also vary, so a good air quality day for me may not be so good for someone with asthma or a child whose lungs are still developing.”

Colorado’s Daily Air Quality Awareness Week Themes:

  • Monday, May 5Local Air Quality: Learn about air quality in your neighborhood and how to access local monitoring tools.
  • Tuesday, May 6Air Pollution and Health: Coinciding with World Asthma Day, this day highlights how air quality impacts respiratory and cardiovascular health.
  • Wednesday, May 7Air Quality Action: Coinciding with Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day, this is a chance to promote cleaner air through active transportation.
  • Thursday, May 8Air Quality Education and Monitoring: Learn how air quality is measured and how you can get involved.
  • Friday, May 9Wildfire Smoke and Indoor Air Quality: Discover tips for protecting yourself during wildfire season and maintaining healthy air inside your home.

Have a question about air pollution, local air-quality, or health impacts? You don’t have to wait until Air Quality Awareness Week to ask your questions. Contact Dr. Morales anytime at amorales@weld.gov or leave a voicemail at 970-400-2222.
